Frequently asked questions
Why will some MP4, MOV, or WebM files not open?
A file extension identifies the container, not the video codec inside it. This tool can use a file only when your browser can decode its video track. Try a current browser or convert the source to a browser-supported codec if preview fails.
Should I export a thumbnail as PNG or JPEG?
PNG is useful for interface footage, diagrams, and text because it avoids JPEG compression artifacts, but files are often larger. JPEG is usually smaller for camera footage, and the quality control lets you balance detail against file size.
Does maximum width crop or stretch the thumbnail?
No. Maximum width scales both dimensions by the same ratio. It never crops, stretches, or enlarges a source that is already narrower than the requested width.
Is the timestamp always exact to one millisecond?
The control accepts millisecond values, but the exported image is the frame the browser decodes at that media time. Frame rate, timestamps, and codec structure can make the actual frame land near the requested millisecond.
Why might a full-resolution export fail?
Very large video frames require substantial browser memory when copied into a canvas. Set a smaller maximum width, close other memory-heavy tabs, or use a desktop browser if the original-size export cannot be created.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. The browser reads the local file through a temporary object URL and creates the image with canvas. The video and thumbnail are not uploaded or sent to an AI service.
