Video Metadata Viewer
Read useful file and display details from an MP4, MOV, or WebM video, then download a JSON report. Nothing leaves your device.
What can this metadata viewer check?
- Reads file name, size, reported MIME type, and recognizable container signature
- Shows duration, dimensions, megapixels, orientation, and reduced aspect ratio
- Estimates the overall bitrate from file size and readable duration
- Reports whether the current browser advertises probable or possible MIME playback
- Downloads the browser-readable metadata as a structured JSON file
- Avoids guessing codec, frame-rate, or per-track values browsers do not expose reliably
Frequently asked questions
Which metadata can the browser read reliably?
For a readable local video, the browser exposes duration and display dimensions. The tool also reads basic file data and recognizable MP4/MOV or WebM container signatures.
Why does the tool show an estimated bitrate?
The estimate divides the complete file size by the readable duration. It represents the overall container rate, not separate video and audio stream bitrates.
Why are codec and exact frame rate not listed?
Standard browser media APIs do not expose those fields consistently for local files. The tool leaves them out instead of guessing from the extension or MIME type.
Does the JSON report include my video?
No. The JSON contains only the displayed text and numeric metadata. It does not embed media bytes or a local file path.
Can a damaged video still have a recognizable container?
Sometimes, but this tool requires the browser to read a usable video track and duration before showing a report. A recognizable header alone is not treated as a valid video.
Is the video uploaded for inspection?
No. Header reading, metadata loading, preview, and JSON creation happen locally in your browser.
